if you have all three campaigns (prophecies, factions, nightfall), you can link them all together and you'll have access to everything minus the GW expansion.

if you expect GW to be like WoW, you'll be disappointed. there's very little "character progession" and "character development". what GW will do is develop you as the player. how you perform in game depends on your skills and how well you can work with your team. GW is also extremely team oriented. you will NEVER have a character that can solo everything in game, so if you're looking for this kind of experience in GW, you'll be disappointed.

GW places very little emphasis on character and equipment. in fact, you can create fully equiped, fully leveled pvp-only characters and go right into pvp action. in GW, all max gear work the same. the only difference between an "elite" item over its common counterpart is that it has a better skin and look better.

GW also features the best pvp in the rpg genre, with strategic depth on par with starcraft and counterstrike. so if you like pvp, you've come to the right place. however, high level pvp is completely team oriented, and will require a dedicated team of 8 to compete.

in short, GW is the complete opposite of WoW. it focuses on the development of you, the player; and not the character you play. it is not a mmorpg in the classic sense. if all you are looking for is another mmorpg grinder, GW is not for you. if you want mission-driven storyline, solid teamplay, and the best pvp the rpg genre has to offer, then GW is good for you.

and oh yeah, GW features jaw-dropping graphics and spectacular scenery, even for a 2+ year game.

Basics... In WoW you can suck really hard and still beat people because you sit infront of a screen and level up all day. In GW, you have to think and put together a decent build before you get somewhere.

As to the professions, you can create any of the "core" professions (warrior, ranger, mesmer, elementalist, monk, necromancer) from any of the three games. You can only create an assassin or a ritualist from the factions campaign. And only create dervishes and paragons from the nightfall campaign. If you link the three games together you can take an assassin/ritualist/dervish/paragon as a secondary profession on a character from a different campaign also.

Whammo Mending + Frenzy + Healsig works. I swear it does.

Anyway, my point is sometimes terrible bars work.

GWars: Skill > Time
It takes good skill composition, execution, foreknowledge of all the skills in-game, and team members that share your likeness to win. Anything less would be un-pwng-ized... Anyone that objects to this has no common sense and is maliciously devoted to flaming others.

No, GW has become button smashing, takes no skill. Pve or Pvp, its all about smashing that poor keyboard

I do not share your view. If that's all it is to you, then you're probably doing a whole lot of lower-level PvE where it requires only that which you've described. And almost all video games are generically the same (except wii) where you mash buttons to play anything. But to play with the big-leagues, you'll find that all of what I mentioned applies and that anything less = FAILURE.

I know a few games like that. Mainly Beat 'Em Ups on the console. But even they take skill and knowledge to an extent. Most forms of PVE and PVP take very little skill, true. But there are some forms in both areas of the game that truly does take organisation.

Four unorganised, yet highly skilled, players will be trounced upon by four of equal skill yet very organised. This is true of all team games, be it Guild Wars, Fortress Forever or Halo.

You can gain an idea of the differences between the three campaigns in the sticky on this forum "Player on a Budget". Overall, most players think the original one, Prophecies, is the best teacher.

For more specific info check out the two wikis at:

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page
http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page

The first one is the "official" wiki available in-game by typing /wiki in the chat bar.

As to your question on the basics, GW is a game that is based on player skill. The max level is 20 and the time getting to that point is training. There is no single "uber" profession or combo, no "super" weapons or armor. Every skill has a way to be defeated.

Time spent in the game does have a benefit - knowledge gained of how skills synergize and team play.
